Such innovations characterized this period as the century of history. Thus, researching, knowing and spreading the past became the goal of a new social group, the historians, who postulated a new reading and a new explanation of the past based on the National History and, in this way, had to face and overcome the Antiquarians and their collecting practices. In this sense, the present article presents one of the facets of the struggle for the monopoly of historical knowledge, focusing on the specific case of the Museum of Natural History established in the second half of the 19th century out of the political and economical importance and the reasons for its absence in the records and Works of the time.
